Why does this website exist?

The Quillayute Airport for Community Resilience website (QA4CR) exists to promote the airport’s role as a community asset.  As such, it is designed to support and encourage public discussion about the future and potential of the airport.

QA4CR has been funded by a Washington Department of Commerce “Solar plus Storage for Resilient Communities” grant. This program funds solar and battery back-up power so community buildings can provide essential services when the power goes out.

The 3 Rivers Fire Department (Clallam County District 6) was awarded a Track 1 grant in 2023 to  study the feasibility of powering the Quillayute Airport in the aftermath of a natural disaster such as a Cascadia megaquake.  The study was completed in Spring of 2024, and is available on the Micro-Grid tab of the QA4CR website.

This study proved the technical feasibility of building a 60kW solar / battery “micro-grid” to power the airport – but at an estimated cost of $517,000.  The City of Forks, which owns the airport, doesn’t have the budget to fund such a project.  Besides, the current infrastructure at the airport can’t justify the day-to-day need for it.

The articles on this site are intended to engage anyone who has an interest in the Quillayute Airport with the hope of revitalizing it to help support the greater Forks / La Push community. Please add your comments as they occur to you.  If you’d like to add an article of your own, please get in touch via Contact | QA4CR.
